What inspires my art?

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

What inspires my art, my creative process, and my mind when it comes to design and development? What brings me the most joy? The little things in life...

Home Made is Everything

Growing up, our house was filled with art. Not art from a store, but art made from my mom. Every wall was filled with her creations. I loved it. It was her, her accomplishments, her joy and inspiration. Their home is still filled with her art. It's what makes my heart feel most at home. Plus, anytime she creates a new piece, I know it will be placed proudly in the house for all to see.

Besides her artwork, a lot of other things were all homemade:

- wash cloths

- blankets

- pottery / dishes

- holiday decor

I loved it! And it came from so many different walks of life, whether that be from a family member or friend. What do you have in your home that is homemade? Maybe you should acquire some homemade things - you just appreciate how it is made more.

Natural Materials

When I was a kid growing up in Michigan, we had the most wonderful neighbors. Oma and Opa (that's German for grandma and grandpa). I was best friends with their granddaughter, so I was over at their house often. Their home was truly an inspiration...and it goes to show because I try to make my home just like theirs!

From every stepping stone in their garden, to the little toys they had ready for me and their granddaughter to play with...it was all natural, handcrafted materials. The little mice dolls were made of real wool that someone had needle felted by hand. Each bowl and plate was hand crafted pottery made by a local artist. They had blown glass art in their garden for decorate and to welcome all kinds of wildlife.

Oma was an artist too - specifically for oil painting (although she crafted other things as well). She had the biggest craft room in their basement and it was filled to the brim with oil paint, sea shells, linen fabrics, etc. Their home had many windows for all natural light, an indoor greenroom filled with plants, a small library with a handcrafted, stone fireplace...you name it. It was an oasis.

That place was special to me and it still is. That's what made me fall in love with natural, handmade things. That's what I want my home to be filled with, what I want my children to play with.

Nature

Okay, this is a total given...but nature just resets your soul and centers you. Even sitting outside for 10 minutes can recharge your batteries. I am so inspired by nature - colors from bird feathers, textures from greenery, shapes from roaming hills, you name it.

From tiny vines climbing a wall, to a perfectly woven bird's nest - you can find art in everything. A lot of future projects I want to try all involve using natural dyes, fabrics, and materials found from nature! I hope to try these things soon.

People

I love painting people, specifically people that I don't know. People that the world doesn't know. We all have our favorite celebrities that you could recognize in a heartbeat...but I like painting the beauty of everyday people. People you would see on the bus, at the grocery store, at the park. People who are unique and beautiful in their own way, and don't need celebrity status for the world to recognize their beauty.

So, I find people on Pinterest, in random books at thrift stores, old photographs from my family. I love show casing the beauty God has made in all of His children. People are a great spark of inspiration because they are all beautiful.

My Favorite Brands

We all have our favorite stores, products, and brands that speak right to our soul. Here are a few people and brands that I simply LOVE.

This is a beautiful shop full of beautiful things. My heart specifically pulls towards their bedding and rugs. Do I shop here? No (ha, my wallet would cry). But do I find inspiration from here? YES.

Want to follow an influencer who is pure joy and love the Lord? She also has an adorable online shop for a list of different things, but mainly accessories.

Cute drawings that just about anyone can relate to. You won't regret seeing her illustrations - they rock.

I think I've come to terms that my soul wants to live in the desert without actually living in the desert. Does that make any sense? Tuscon, AZ and all of it's color schemes just speak to my heart! This account decorates in the coolest way. I look to this for inspiration all the time. And I hope to decorate my home like this too...

Again - super cool artist with super cool visual art. Her illustrations are so moving and POWERFUL. Plus, her color schemes for her art are everything.

This is a sustainable furniture store! Super comfy furniture and creative decorations.

Okay, talk about incredibly cute and unique illustrations!! She is an illustrator and author of children's books. Please...go and look at her animals. You're going to fall in love.

So, those are just to name a few!

All in all, the world inspires me. I am always amazed with the beauty around me and I am genuinely trying to me more aware of it. I don't want to miss out on the things that spark joy in my life, and I don't want to miss out on the new things that will bring me joy.
